I want you to practice analyzing nonliterary texts. While watching the film Rashomon, then, I’d like you to describe the sequence of at least ONE scene in the film using the vocabulary from the Basic Language of Film worksheet.
| Shot # | Type of Shot | Description of Shot |
| 2.33 | Long shot | Shows the subject from top to bottom, not necessarily the filming frame |
| 2.40 | Then closer up/ sideways on | Side view of the face |
| 2.52 | Slow zoom | The slow zoom, gives a view of the characters facial expression |
| 9.00 | Dolly and pan shots through the trees | These are shot that are filmed through the trees to give an impression of the surrounding. |
| 9.00 | Famous sky shots | Shots that are frequently used in the movie, sky in frame |
| 23.40 | Dolly and pan shots | Difficult to do in a forest |
| 28.15 | Triangle cuts | Following the gaze back and forward |
| 34.10 | Lots of short cuts | When the husband and the Tajomaru are fighting |
| 1.13.00 | Lots of short cuts | Another fight between the two of them |
| 1.27.02 | Worm’s eye view | They film this from below and film the sky or buildings whatever the camera is focusing on |
Day 8: 12-10-2019
I woke up around 7.30 because everyone else woke up. I went to get fresh bread from ICA MAX together with my uncle. It was only 8 am. We got fresh bread had breakfast, I started studying everyone else was cleaning the apartment. My sister was playing in Laniya’s room, my grandfather was relaxing and I was studying. Later this afternoon we would be going to a restaurant, exciting! My uncle went to gym, so around 13.00 o’clock we went to the restaurant. At first I thought what kind of restaurant is this, because it didn’t look like one from the outside, but when we sat down there were quite some people and the food looked good. I ordered kebab, a spicy one. There was salad bar, so we first got some salads. In between we made some family photos. My grandfather asked the cook to take a photo, my uncle and I were quite uncomfortable with that, haha. Our food come around the bright time, everything looked really good and it smelled delicious. We took some other family photos and you will never believe it, my grandfather asked the same cook to take a photo, he was quite embarrassed by that. Oh yeah, before our meal came we ordered a Turkish pizza which was delicious. We all ate from it. It was super! So our food came and then something happened. My two aunts with their husbands and children came to the same restaurant. It was really awkward, because our family frequently has problems, ouch. So there was a real awkward moment where they didn’t know what to do, finally they left and went to another restaurant. It escalated quite fast, before we knew the whole family knew what had happened, too fun. We ate our meals and left to Solna centrum, my grandfather wanted to take us there. Almost all the shopping places are in malls, except for the city centre itself. It was really warm and there were loads of shops. We spent a lot of time in there. My uncle bought some clothes in the H&M for his daughter. I liked the fact that he asked my opinion about certain clothing as well. I think that was because in a jacket store I tried on one jacket and both my mother and grandfather didn’t like it, but I did so maybe he thought that we had some similar interests! I had been to this mall a couple of years ago. My mom had her hair done, my grandfather bought some medicines. We were home around 18.00. Everyone was tired and took a shower. We spent the night with having tea and eating Kurdish sweets.
Day 7: 11- 10-2019
Today was my last day of the internship, I was feeling a bit upset. I had so much fun this week, if I could I would have stayed another week. Today I had to come a bit later, because Henry was giving his presentation. I would have liked to join the meeting, but Daphne said I would have been a bit boring for me. That is why I took one bus later, 9.07 am. At 10.00 o’clock I arrived I waited in the canteen for 5 minutes, and then I got a message that Daphne was able to open the doors for me. I asked if the presentation was interesting or not, surprisingly she said that Henry had done a very good job. I settled down, but I couldn’t work on my project because some minutes later Daphne asked if I was ready to do some experiments. Today was microscope day. I had the plates ready, because we had made them during this week. I got some information from Daphne what would happen if we added several dice to them. If the bacteria was pink under the microscope it was gram negative and had two membranes, if it was purple it was positive and only one membrane. So we added four different dice to them each time cleaned them and left it for 1 min each. When we had done that we went upstairs to the microscope and looked at them, to see the results. We tried to take photos of the results which was very stressful, because it was hard and to find the good angle. We prepared the plates with everything I had chosen, we added the dice and prepared those as well. We went up stairs again and looked at them, Grant had moles. We looked at all the plates I had chosen to look at. We went back to the lab and showed Grant his dirty fingers. He found it funny. We had lunch I ate my two sandwiches, banana and tangerine and some chocolate milk as well. We had a discussing about how to pronounce certain words. For example, Iraq and Arabic. It was quite funny. We also talked about TV shows for kids we grew up it. They found Basie and Adrian too scary for kids. We had quite a long lunch, but it was cosy and interesting. After lunch we prepared some the DNA, because Daphne was going to prepare a gel. She prepared the gel I watched, it was radioactive so it could be dangerous. In the meantime when the gel was becoming hard we had Fika. James had brought cake, so we ate cake had some chocolate milk and had conversations. Around 15.30 we continued the gel, we poured the droplets in it we had prepared before, in this way you could see where the DNA was. We looked at the gel under a machine and printed the photo. Last thing we did was building a snowman. We got ice from the minus 80 degrees freezer. We build a snowman of it and added decoration. The snow was really sticky so it helped with building it. That was it, I had finished my internship. I said goodbye to everyone, Grant, Jose,Felix, Henry, James and Daphne. Jose said I could come to Mexico to his lab and Grant said I could come to Canada, maybe one day I will! I was quite said to leave because I had so much fun this week, I learned a lot made new colleagues. I left to the tunnelbana it was crowded again, went to my next train, I thought I was in the wrong train so I got out of it, but it was the right one. So I had to wait four more minutes. I ate some of my Turkish fruits and twix while I had to wait 10 minutes for the bus, the bus was quite crowded I sat in front a whole new angle for me. I walked the last part home as always, Babou was home as well, I ate dinner, took a shower. My mom called that her flight was cancelled, instead of 21.20 the fight left 00.35. I felt sorry for Yara, my sister she had to be up so late. I went to sleep at 2.30 am. I heard my uncle and grandfather leave I wanted to join as well, but I was too tired. I don’t know the time, but my uncle woke me up to change beds, I said hi to my mom and sister and later went to sleep again, everyone woke up so early I was really tired!
Day 6: 10-10-2019
The same old days, I woke up around half past seven, had breakfast with my family prepared my lunch and left for the bus. At 8.50 am. my bus arrived and around 9.45 I arrived at the university nothing went wrong this time. My mom told me today was my uncle’s birthday, but it wasn’t, so embarrassing! Today Felix would be studying alone, so it was only Daphne and I. Yesterday I went to the museum, today the crown princes of Sweden with give an exhibition about something new placed in there, not sure if I should go there again today. There is a slight chance she won’t be there anymore when I am there and I have seen it all yesterday. Dilemma’s. Yesterday we had prepared the tubes with DNA in it, we put those in the 37 degrees oven and today we were going to add liquids and after each liquid centrifuge it so the waste would remain in the tube and we could get rid of it very easily. We did this twice with two different liquids and them washed them twice and centrifuged them twice as well. In the end we got the DNA left in the tube and put those in the fridge, so we could send them later the day to Germany. We looked at the samples of our own choice, more colonies had grown and there several colors on them, so more different bacteria had grown on the plates. The yoghurt was already growing however, tomorrow we could even see the colonies way better and more appart. Than we had two other samples one of them that grows in soil and in your stomach and another one, there you could see the difference between them as well. The one from the soil was way thicker and had curved edges, while the other was thinner and shinny and had sharp edges. Tomorrow we would be looking at them all under the microscope. We had lunch again at 12.30. After lunch we would be making a solution which Grant was using yesterday, but was almost empty. Oh yeah, we poured the DNA of the banana in a tube! Yesterday we made a new plan which was making that 500 ml tube of solution Grant didn’t want to make. So we used 90.4 grams of a solid and added water to it, we had to make the pH to 8, so we started with 4 pH and added KOH until the pH was 8. This took so long, I at least held the pH measuring for ten minutes. We finally made the pH 8 and than we left it on the machine that spins it around. We continued with the tubes we prepared yesterday. We poured 15ml in the other tubes with the barcodes on it. I kinda screwed up since I didn’t know which ones I already did. But we put them all in a bag and walked to the building where the post office is and we put them in the mail, because around 15.00 they get picked up. We had a little break after that and we would recap the liquid we were trying to make with the pH of 8. So we were including more solids in the bottle and that made the Buffer done. We used 40 ml of the Buffer put it into a larger cane from 1 liter and added the rest with water. Than the Buffer part was over as well. We had done everything so in theory we were done for the day, but I asked if we could do the ice experiment so we did. We got dried ice from the basement, it was really cold. We prepared a glass with water and tried to cut the ice in pieces, it was harder than we thought it would be. Daphne used a knife for it. I poured ice in the water and it was amazing to see what the reaction was. Later on we used another bottle filled with ethanol and did the same, poured ice in that as well. After a while the ethanol bottle was completely frozen. It was very cold when you touched it. We watched the reaction for at least 15 min, but after that it was enough so we cleaned it up and went to the tunnelbana. Daphne joined me, because she had to go to Tekniska Högskolan to her Danish friend. It was so crowded in the train, when Daphne left there were many people there, luckily I was at the end better than in the middle, because than I had no place to stay. Now comes the disgusting part, there was a man in front of me who had an disgusting smell, yak. It was so hard not to smell it, I almost threw up. But the problem was I had no other place to stay so I had pray for him to leave the next stop, but he didn’t so I had to smell that for a longer time. Finally he left, but a man who was standing behind me came in front of me who stank as well, so my luck was already over, luckily we got to the central sooner than I had hoped for it. So I went to my next train where I had a place to sit, I couldn’t stand anymore my legs were too tired. I sat down watched Full House and before I knew it I got to Akalla. I took the bus back and walked the last part home, but it was already dark believe it or not it was only 18.00 o’clock. I got home around 18.15 and changed and wanted to eat dinner, I was really hungry. But my grandfather had a new phone, the Iphone XS!!!! I had to help him with everything, before I was actually eating my dinner it was 19.00 o’clock, but during my dinner he came over and over and over, so at 20.00 o’clock I was really done eating. At this time my uncle came home as well, he went to the doctor and did some grocery shopping. My uncle and my grandfather went to a restaurant today. I wasn’t able to join them, because I went to the laboratorium. I did some homework, watched Netflix, at 22.00 I went to sleep again.
Day 5: 9-10-2019:
Day five already, day three in the lab. Because I didn’t see my grandfather yesterday evening I saw him this morning. It was really nice to see him, even though I still had some stomach ache and head caches. We had breakfast all together and around 8.45 I went to the bus station I was right on time. This time I took the right bus, finally! Today I want to do everything right. I watched Full House on the largest train trip. I walked to the department, someone opened the door for me. I settled down, but Daphne soon picked me up for further experiments. We looked at the DNA from yesterday if they had grown so far. They did, but we wanted them to grow even more so we put them back in the “oven”. We looked at both the yakult and the samples of my choice. After that we started our new experiment with a banana. This was an experiment to show how to see the DNA on a larger scale. In the real experiment we have done the previous days, we couldn’t really observe something, because it was so small to vision, but this would show me what it would look like. I started stamping the banana to a stew. We made a solution, from warm water from 60 degrees which we had put in the 60 degrees oven. We used soap, because soap breaks down the cell and due to the break of the cell we can get to the DNA. The soap also breaks down the nucleus, in this way we really get to the DNA. We added ethanol and soap and some salt. We put this in the warm water, so nothing would cool down. We put the banana in the solution as well and we stirred this for around 15 minutes. Than we filtered it but that took quite some time, we put everything in the 60 degrees oven so it would work faster. But we first had lunch at half past 12. Around this time they introduced the winner of the nobel prize. The winner was Mr. Goodenough he won due to the invention of Lithium-ion batteries. We had lunch I had my selfmade sandwiches and we talked about movies and streaming and blue raid, random but fun! After lunch, we went back to our banana DNA. It was completely filtered. We added the ice cold Ethanol to the solution, this would make the DNA stick to one side, since the ethanol is ice cold and the solution was really warm. We had to pipet the DNA out of the tube and put that on a plate. It was really cool to see the DNA visible like that. I took some nice photos of it because tomorrow they would look different. After the banana part we made some new samples for tomorrow. We were going to look at those samples under the microscope. We warmed our LB solution in the microwave and I poured those into the plates. We waited for some time because it had to become solid. In the meantime, we made some new tubes with the DNA to try it again for tomorrow, we put those in the fridge. Daphne told me we were going to do something with ice this week, which would have a cool effect! Later this day I will go to the museum of the University. The museum consists of all kinds of animals! Daphne and I walked to the museum together, Felix would wait for her at the tunnelbana. The museum seemed really big from the outside and spectacular. I was a bit anxious I had to pay my entrance, but if if that was the case I would have paid for it because it seemed like it was worthy. But I didn’t need to pay a penny, it was completely free. I went to the first area and Daphne went back to the tunnelbana. It was cool and interesting to see all those animals there. I took so many photos and sent many snaps to the squad goals. I believe I spent around 1.5 hour in the museum. There were many games to play, like how far I could jump, my balance etc. There were so many different areas from micro to enormous. Around 16.45 I left the building took some last photos, took some maps and booklets. I took some photos outside as well and then ate my last piece of my bread and walked to the tunnelbana. This time I found everything easily and correctly, I listened to music and watched Full house again. What I just came to realise was that the train station stops at Akala and that looked just like Tensta. I took the bus the other bus I could have taken just left so I waited five minutes. In the bus I listened to music and than walked home and later phoned the AH for a problem which was solved. Babou was home and I changed and ate dinner, rice and chicken. After that I started cleaning the bed which I had made a mess of because of my bleeding nose. I took some time, but it still wasn’t completely clean, but better. I did the dishes, took a shower, threw the bin out and cleaned everything. Did some homework and than at 21.45 my uncle came home from work. Tomorrow is his birthday which is fun too, he isn’t going to celebrate, what even funnier was that my grandfather didn’t even know it is his birthday tomorrow!
Day 4: 8-10-2019
The second day in the laboratorium! I woke up around the same time as the previous days had some breakfast with my uncle only, my cousins aren’t going to be here anymore : (. My bus would leave at 8.30 am. so at 8.15 I left home and went to the bus station. However, I was standing on the wrong side of the street, so my bus arrived at the other side, but I was too late for that. I took the next bus it would go somewhere else, but the end destination was the same. When I arrived at the trains above ground, I wasn’t able to go through the doors, so I went back to the bus stations and took the same bus back. I waited there on the right bus and took that to the metro. Luckily, I was able to find both my trains with no problems. In the meantime, one ride takes a lot longer than the other one, therefore I was watching Full House on one of the train rides. I arrived around 9.45, I managed to get out of the train station, however a Spanish girl from the same lab recognized me, which was real fun, because I didn’t see her. We walked together to the lab, she took a different way, I was seeing new things on my way. When we arrived Daphne was surprised to see me, since I said I would text her when I arrived at the Department. The department has a lock, and everyone has a card to open the door, since I don’t have one I can’t get in there by myself. I settled done on my one spot. Only ten minutes later, Daphne picked me up and we started doing experiments. We had made food for the bacteria yesterday, today we would give the food to them and then we would be able to get the DNA, in steps of course. We added many liquids and centrifuged the solution lots of times. In this way we filtered the DNA and got rid of the waste. Waste we put into a special waste bottle which stank enormously. Finally, after three to five times centrifuging the solution we got the DNA. We put those in tubes and brought them to the mailbox. All the samples were being send to a company in Germany, they would analyse the samples and give us the information back if it was the right and convenient DNA we wanted. We were done with this experiment. Yesterday we made the food and put those in tubes. We had around 10 tubes who turned cloudy and those were the ones we were going to use. We used some liquids and later spread everything out with plastic balls so the colonies would be seperated. We had also made other samples and those we would be using for the bacterias of my choice. I had around 12 samples, I used my watch, phone, fingers, door handle, microwave, coffee machine, and the funniest of all Grant’s cough and his fingers! Grant is a guy from Canada who works here too. It was too funny to watch Grant cough in those samples. We put all the samples in the 37 degrees oven so the bacterias would do their job. Tomorrow or Thursday we would see results. We had also done and experiment on yakult the yoghurt drink. We had samples and the fruit, but we some yoghurt in the first sample and then we dillused them. We took some out of the first and put it in the second, from the second to the third etc. Eventually we had done them all and used the plastic balls again to spread everything equally. This samples we put into the oven as well so we had results by tomorrow. Oww I forgot, we had lunch as well. Lunch was really cosy. I brought my sandwiches, but the people there having lunch were kind. Henry from Ghana was too funny. We were talking about food and he started explaining why everyone should have a rice cooker, it was too funny he explained everything in great detail from each rice brand! There were conversations about allergies and how they managed to work with it in previous jobs. They explained that each week there was a presentation and the person giving the presentation would bring Fikka, that is lunch. Henry was like someone can take over his place and he would only bring the Fikka!! The people are really nice, I enjoyed my lunch a lot. Today I ended a bit late around 17.00 pm. I went to the tunnelbana and found the train. However, it was the wrong one, during the train I realized I was in the wrong train. I got out of the train at the next stop and looked only were to go to. The only way was via the train above the ground, but in the morning I didn’t manage to get through the doors, but this was the only way. I went to penneltag and tried getting through the doors and so I did. It was kind of weird, since this morning I couldn’t manage to get through it. I almost took the wrong train again, but it was an almost. Last minute I found out it was the wrong one again. I took the right train this time. I went through Spänga, nearby my grandmother’s house. I left the train station the same place where I couldn’t get through the doors. Took the bus home and walked the last part. It was already quite late, even though I left the Department later, but it had to do with the fact I took a train to early. When I came home I changed, and later prepared my pizza. I had to make a pizza myself. I was home alone again, my uncle would pick my grandfather from the airport immediately after work, so I couldn’t join him. I went to sleep already because I knew they would come home late. However, something happened in the middle of the night. I got a bleeding nose. I was quite a heavy one. There was blood everywhere, I went to my uncle unfortunately I had to wake him up, because I didn’t know what to do there was a lot of blood. Eventually, I laid down and the blood stopped flowing, however the blood did come in my mouth and later in my stomach. Which made me feel a bit sick. But I fell asleep and that was real nice after the disaster.
Day 3: 7-10-2019:
Today was the day my internship would start. But first I had some family breakfast and around 8.00 am. I brought my cousin to the daycare and my other cousin to school. It was quite a long ride, but I had a lot of fun with the cuties. They were really sad when I left them behind, because I wasn’t going to see them anymore this week. I was upset as well. After that part my uncle dropped me at the tunnelbana, there I would meet Daphne, the person who let this happen and I was following her in the lab this week. I met her there and we already started. She gave me a complete tour of the campus. It was enormous, however in between buildings there were nice parks. Eventually we went to the biochem and physics building. It is not really part of the university. Here people really work, this their job or this for their Phd. Some take Swedish classes, like Daphne, but many of them do not study anymore. Furthermore, where there some people older than the average student age. I quite liked the building and the people as well, on first impressions. We immediately started working in the lab. She gave me full tour of her work area. There are several supervisors and each supervisors has its own lab and in those lab work people. Daphne was part of Gunters lab, they were called Gvh. The lab really looked like a lab you see in movies, I didn’t expect this to happen, it was so cool to see. She introduced me to almost everyone working in the building. I noticed something, there were people from all over the world, Spain, Germany, Ghana, Canada, England, Armenian and more and more. It was so fun to see a work space with so many different cultures, I really enjoyed it. After that we started working, we did a experiment were we had to make food for the bacteria. The departure studies DNA and bacteria. We made food for the bacteria was really fun, she told me what to do and I actually was doing all the work which was nice to do. I had to wear a lab coat and gloves just like in a real lab you see on tv. We were busy for 1,5 to 2 hours. After that I was allowed to work in the office. Each department has several offices, they have two and I worked in one of them. Around 12.30 Daphne and I were ready for lunch many workers there were having lunch too, I socialized with workers from the same department to workers from other departments. We had lunch for at least 45 min. I worked for some ten minutes more in the office and then Daphne and I were ready for some more experiments. The experiment we had done in the morning we would be finishing now and we would make some new samples for the experiment for tomorrow. So we did that and around 15.45 we were done so I went home. I gave Daphne my presents and her moms as well, she was happy about it, it were all Dutch treats. We walked to the Tunnelbana together, however I had to go one my own there. It was a bit scary, maybe I would miss something or couldn’t find something, it was really crowded. But luckily, it was much easier than expected. I went from the first train to the second and at last waited for the bus. At the end of the station I got out and walked the last part home. No one was home yet, I did some work watched tv and later on warmed my food, it was rice with chicken. I watched expeditie robinson the whole time. In between I washed dishes and hanged the clothes from the washing machine. Around 21.45 Muhammad came home. It was a short notice, because at 22.00 I went to bed, I was tired. I really missed Laniya and Lawin : (
Day 2: 6-10-2019
At 8.30 am. I woke up, had some nice breakfast with my family and later that day around 10 am. we went to the swimming pool. The pool was nearby, but gigantic. There many different sizes from baby pools to toddler pools to swimming lanes. There was a cool waterslide, we went through at least ten times. Around 13.00 we went home and around 14.00 we ate lunch. My uncle had made a nice dish and we were so hungry that we ate more than we expected to eat. The rest of the afternoon my cousins and I watched Moana, did some drawing, played we did all kinds of fun. My uncle left at 18.00 so we were home alone, I managed to do some just dance, they both liked it. When my uncle came back he brought to friends of his. We were not feeling very comfortable so we went outside. There was a playground it belonged to the flat itself. We played there for an hour, but it was getting cold and dark so we went home again. My uncle made us some fries and chicken nuggets. My cousin but an enormous junk of ketchup on his fries, it was too funny to watch. After our dinner, we played some more, but it was already time to go to bed, since tomorrow was a school day. Tomorrow I would bring my cousins to school and to the daycare.
Day 1: 5-10-2019.
At around 5.00 am. I woke up, since my flight would depart at 8.45 am. This was the first time flying on my own, it was very exciting but I was feeling anxious at the same time. I had no one supporting me if I needed help, but luckily my dad helped me towards the security. We went to the KLM area where a woman at the desk was so kind enough to print my boarding pass. However, after that part I ended up being on my own, but the most important task was over. My final assign was to find my gate, not a big of a deal. Just following the boards and arrows to the right direction, I actually found my way over there very easily. Half an hour before boarding I sat there watching netflix and waited for the right time to get on to the plane. At around half past eight I went through the ‘security’ and later found my seat in the airplane. The flight was only two hours long, but I still got some sandwiches and a cup of tea. During the flight I watched Netflix, listened to music and eventually talked with my neighbours. The one sitting next to me, came from Canada because he had a project to do and was now flying to Sweden where he lives himself. We talked about what I was going to do in Sweden and he told me about his time so far in Sweden why it is a nice place to live such kind of things, we had a nice conversation. Half past ten almost landing time, I was preparing to meet my family, I was so excited. Around eleven I was completely finished, got my luggage from the band where I checked it in. Around twelve a clock, my uncle picked me up. I waited for at least an hour, he was each time at the wrong terminal. It was much colder than I expected it to be. It was only three degrees. I met my cousins, they were so cute. We went home, ate lunch. My uncle had prepared some nice Kurdish dish it was delicious. After lunch my cousins and I played for a long time. One cousin a girl who is seven, Laniya and another one a boy Lawin who is four. They liked me and I liked them. I gave them my presents. Until, I guess 16.30 we had played we went outside to the park. It was nearby, the park was quite big and real fun. We jumped rope with random people, played football, climbing and went swinging. At 18.30 pm we went home and around 19.30 we ate dinner, kebab. My cousins and I played for a longer time and around ten we went to sleep, I was really tired since I had woken up at 5.00 am in the morning. So going to bed early wouldn’t mind at all. Tomorrow we would go to the swimming pool!
